
Vidya Balan, known for her graceful saree selections, recently called for a change in how people view the versatile garment. Speaking at a handloom conference in Bengaluru, she challenged the stereotype that sarees are only for older generations. Vidya stressed the importance of embracing handloom fabrics as a modern and empowering fashion choice. “You can wear a saree in any way you like. It is a versatile garment suitable for any occasion,” said the Do Aur Do Pyaar actor. She highlighted the need to appreciate the diverse weaves produced in India and take pride in our handloom heritage.
“We should proudly wear our indigenous weaves and celebrate them. I have worn sarees at international film festivals and insist on showcasing this unique aspect of our culture,” she remarked. Vidya expressed her love for sarees, describing how they make her feel beautiful, confident, and free to be herself regardless of her size. Encouraging young girls to embrace sarees, she emphasized the need to promote them as a trendy and not just traditional attire.
“We must cherish our family legacies through these garments and promote sustainability by not discarding outfits so quickly. Wearing sarees can help create demand for weavers, supporting their livelihoods,” she added. Statistics reveal that the handloom industry in Karnataka is valued at ₹1,000 crore annually, with 1,20,000 skilled weavers and 4 major handloom clusters in the state. Over 45% of Mulberry Silk in the region is also sourced from Karnataka.The country originates from Karnataka.
